The script below is intended as a starting point or suggestion. The important things are asking questions to inform the source tracker and letting sources know they’re allowed and encouraged to not answer questions if they are uncomfortable.
[This first part can be adjusted and adapted to your own voice. Just make sure your sources get the gist: we’re asking about demographic information to better identify our own biases in reporting. Individual data won’t be shared.]
[Your organization] is trying to do a better job of representing our communities, which means we’re collecting data on who we talk to *and why* we’re talking to them.
So, I’ve got a couple of quick questions to make sure you’re identified correctly in our internal tracker – however, just a heads up – this information has no bearing on the interview we just did, nor will your individual data be shared beyond my team.
[The section below needs to stay pretty similar. The questions are written pretty specifically (with guidance from your internal DEIB committee).]
If I ask you a question you’re uncomfortable with, you do not have to answer it.
- What is your gender?
- How would you define your race or ethnicity?
- What year were you born? (I know it might feel weird to answer this, but we want to verify age to ensure we are talking to folks of all age groups.)
- What are your pronouns?
- What is your ability status?
- What type of area do you live in - urban, suburban or rural?
Thank you so much for answering these questions!
